Mr. Nigel Barrett
I hold a Masters in Education along with a Postgraduate degree in Primary education and a Bachelor degree in Teaching and Learning from Canterbury University, New Zealand.
I have held leadership roles in two well-established schools in Asia, a brand-new International School in Dubai and I am currently Primary Head here at GEMS CIK, Uganda.
After graduating and traveling to England to play rugby and teach, I discovered the world of international education and moved to Kenya where my wife, Valerie, and I spent four years.
Our daughter, Zoe (14) was born in Nairobi and then we moved to Brunei, Borneo where our second daughter, Lea (12) was born.
After five years in Borneo, we then moved to the Philippines where we spent 6 years, followed by two years in Dubai.
My passion for education has never wavered and I believe in the enjoyment of learning and the importance of children being part of a community where they have ownership, a sense of belonging and pride and are challenged to grow and try new things.
Being able to live in a range of different countries and learn first hand about a vast range of cultures is a real privilege.
In the Philippines I really discovered the importance of combining the school community with the wider community to let children experience the world around them through valuable and enriching interactions.
I also believe learning outside of the classroom through residentials is vital to children’s development and have organised trips all around the world.
I am thoroughly enjoying being back in East Africa with my family, experiencing the Pearl of Africa while working in a world class school.
